Moisture Content Analysis

Elemental Lab can analyse moisture content by weight loss in air at specified temperature, either on a wet basis, or by dry loss/moisture content (where the sample is pre-dried at a requested temperature prior to analysis).

Sample types frequently analysed for moisture content include: foods, particulate wood fuels or other biomass, and pharmaceuticals.

Elemental Lab's analysis method determines moisture content as a percentage loss in weight of a sample when heated under specified conditions (requested by the customer) - for example, 105°C for 16 hours, or until constant weight is obtained.

Percentage moisture is calculated by:
Moisture content (wet basis) = (Initial wet weight - Final dry weight) / Initial wet weight x 100

(Moisture refers to all matter within a sample which can be vaporised - this includes not just water, but also fats, volatile solvents, and alcohols.)

Analysis according to various ASTMs is possible – contact us with your requirements.

  • Results in 5-7 business days from receipt of sample
  • A sample size of 30-50 g is required
